A Mobile-Friendly Website is Crucial for Google Rankings

A mobile-friendly website — one that is optimized for tablets and smart phones — is no longer a luxury, but a requirement.

Today, the majority of our clients have more than 50% of their traffic coming from mobile devices. The shift to mobile isn’t in progress any longer; it has already occurred. Following this change, search engines have had to modify their strategies as well. In 2015 Google updated its search algorithm to give preference to mobile-friendly websites. In May, 2016 Google boosted mobile-friendly websites once again in its search algorithm. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since mobile traffic is over 50% for so many websites. In August, 2016 Google confirmed that more than 60% of searches were from mobile devices.

Big Change: Google Starts Testing Mobile First Index

In November, 2016 Google started testing a mobile-first index which primarily used the mobile version of a website as the primary index of a given site. Google noted that it would index the desktop version of the site if no mobile site was available. The downside was that the site owner would not see the benefits of Google’s mobile-friendly ranking boost. This is more evidence Google continues to show a preference towards mobile-friendly websites. (http://searchengineland.com/google-begins-experimenting-mobile-first-ind…)

Mobile E-commerce is Booming

E-commerce is also going mobile in a big way with one third of Black Friday purchases made on a mobile device. ChannelAdvisor noted that mobile e-commerce orders surpassed desktop orders for the first time, with 53% of all orders on Thanksgiving Day completed on a mobile device. Black Friday 2016 became the first day ever to generate over a billion dollars in sales from mobile devices with $1.2 billion, a 33% increase over 2015, according to Adobe Digital Insights.
